Thursday Thought: Guest Post CLAUDIA TALLER on “Balance”

When I stepped off the bus this morning, it was pouring down rain.  A complete stranger put an umbrella over my head and we chatted easily for the five minutes it took to get to the building.  After I thanked him and went on my way, I thought about the nice surprise of spending time in conversation with a good-looking guy first thing this morning.  It felt like the universe was telling me to live in the moment.

During last evening’s religious study class, we talked about how important it is to have a Sabbath so we can refuel.  I have been struggling with all the social networking I have to do to communicate about my events—it’s keeping me from getting my writing done.  I need balance, not just in my life but also in my writing.

I journaled this morning.  A planned stay at a hermitage at a monastery awaits me in October.  I have allocated some blocks of time for social networking and keep my “real” writing time sacred.  This morning proved I’m open to possibility and synchronicity, which are important for ideas, and zest for life, and trudging forward.  And my walk at lunch time allowed me to let my worries go, a form of meditation.

Interesting how I can hold the tree pose for ten minutes on each leg and feel totally centered and balanced, but once my day gets going I soon feel like I’m going in a million directions.  Julia Cameron had it right in The Artist’s Way when she recommended Morning Pages, Artist’s Dates, and attention to synchronicity.  In her second book, she added walking.  If we add sorting out priorities to her formula, we can achieve balance. 

When life feels out of control, we just need to do tree pose and go for a walk to ruminate on our morning journaling, retreat time, and life’s surprises.  Writing then becomes what we dream it should be—a bit of ourselves flowing through the keyboard and out into the world.  It happens when we’re in balance.

Tuesday Tickle: Two Things Art Journaling Has Taught Me

I recently discovered art journaling when I stumbled across a magazine dedicated to the concept. It fascinated me by combining things I’d done separately for years. Art journaling combines writing, scrapbooking, and art into one satisfying activity that has taught me a few things about what it means to be creative.

 

The term “art journal” has more than one definition depending on who’s doing the talking. An artist is never without her sketch pad much like a writer is never without a small notebook for jotting down ideas. The new twist on the phrase is the inclusive nature of the activity. Practically anything goes as long as it can be applied to the page. Art journalers are very resourceful when it comes to getting something to stick to a journal page. Glue, brads, staples, needle and thread, masking tape, and adhesive bandages are just some of what’s possible to use when affixing something to a page.

 

This is an early attempt at art journaling when I was learning to incorporate different textures.

 

 

 

The freedom of art journaling has taught me two valuable lessons that I’ve carried out into the world.

 

1. Although I have great respect for the study of art, you don’t have to have an art degree or be really talented in art to succeed. The goal for me is an artistic interpretation of something written. This has given me confidence and expanded my ideas about what creativity is and made me more accepting of other people’s creative efforts.

2. I’ve learned that it’s not enough to be brave enough to write down difficult things. What counts is being brave enough to really face the difficult things in writing and then the make changes.

Thursday Thought: What’s in a muse and other “writerly” motivations?

All writers have their thing. That thing that keeps you going, keeps you writing. For my non-fiction, ‘Caring for Your Special Needs Dog’ and now the second book in progress, my muse is my dog Oscar. He is always on my feet and serves as a constant reminder of how wonderful dogs are. I want to do well by him so that I can donate more money to the Neurological unit at Texas A&M School of Veterinarian Medicine.

            For my fiction work, I just love to read fantasy. I love the escape into a new and exciting place. When I was little I use to sit in my closet and pray that I would find my way into Narnia. I should have known at that moment that I would be a writer with an imagination like that!

With my freelancing, my motivation is my general curious nature. I love writing about anything and therefore learning about so many topics. I enjoy variety and avoiding boredom.

Sometimes that leap into becoming a writer takes a while to make. For me it was a gradual transition. I recently wrote on “taking that leap” and how I wish I had done it sooner. What is your becoming a writer story? What is your muse or motivation? Everyone has a story to tell other than the ones we write. I’d love to hear your story in a comment below.

Thursday Thought: Inspiration Inclination

Look around. Is your work…well, is it ‘work’ and not one exciting, innovative creation after another? Could your material be so predictable that you are in what dancer/choreographer Twyla Tharp calls “a false start?” Tharp defines a “false start,” or a creative rut as different from being blocked and most definitely different from being in a good groove. “A rut is the part of the journey where you’re spinning your wheels, spitting out mud behind you, splattering other people, and not going anywhere. You know you’re in a rut when you annoy other people, bore your collaborators and supporters, fail to challenge yourself, and get the feeling that the world is moving on while you’re standing still. You may also feel that you’ve been here before; déjà vu, with some flop sweat on the side, is a sure sign of a rut. Perhaps the surest sign is a feeling of frustration and relief when you’re done (“Boy, I’m glad that’s over!”) rather than anticipatory pleasure (“I can’t wait to get back here tomorrow.”) Call it consistency, following a syllabus, or teaching a “graded system,” you know when your work is dry and uninspired. It happens to everyone. Don’t worry. There are some simple ideas to help refresh your artistry and renew the feeling of, “I love being me!” that every creative person knows.

If the inspiration inclination has temporarily slipped away and writing another page feels like pulling teeth (your own,) it could be a simple matter of needing to “fill the well” as writer Julia Cameron refers to in her book “The Artist’s Way.” Cameron says that the artist’s brain relies on images and that creativity is sometimes blocked or stymied by a lack of artistic brain food. Cameron recommends regular “artist dates” with yourself to “restock the pond” of artful ideas you seem to be lacking. For an artist date, you simply schedule yourself to attend a thought provoking artistic event like a gallery opening or orchestra concert and ingest the sensations all around to help replenish your own source of creative energy. Cameron suggests a habitual practice of artist dates until you understand the ebb and flow of your creativity and how to use the work of other inspired creators to support your own creations.

When I first tried the regular artist date, it annoyed me because I felt like I was being taken away from my own work. Cameron and Tharp both claim that resistance is a sure sign that a respite is most assuredly the best medicine. After a year of consistently attending art shows, poetry readings, and independent film showings, I noticed a rush of recurrent creativity to the point where I can hardly keep up with myself today! I heard a lecture by children’s author Phyllis Reynolds Naylor recently who summed up how I feel. Someone asked her what she did for writer’s block. “I don’t have writer’s block,” she said. “I have so many ideas floating around in my head all the time that I have writer’s diarrhea!” I now have a habit of enjoying the work of other artists and I’m positive it contributes to my never-ending flow of creativity and ideas.

 Inspiration is always available to the artist who understands that creativity is a process dependent on many details. Here are some ideas to consider.

Low budget

1) Read books and magazines on creativity.

2) Start a journal. You will be amazed at the creative freedom you can experience from a regular habit of journaling.

3) Find an online community of artists and communicate.

4) Attend free art events like gallery showings, outdoor concerts, and crafts fairs.

 

Medium budget

1) Take classes from another local teacher. Learning rejuvenates the creative spirit.

2) Analyze the work of other artists. Take pencil and paper and write down what you see or read in videos and books and dissect the creativity of others. Explain to yourself why they did what they did, and then how you would have done it differently and why.

3) Attend poetry readings, art shows, etc. at the local gallery or coffee shop.

4) Cruise through a history museum or see a local theatre production.

 

High budget

1) Travel to an artist’s retreat or big city where art is revered and the process is respected. Take part in performances, conferences, workshops, and activities that allow you to deeply experience the art.

2) Take college courses at home or far away that will expand your appreciation of creativity.

Tuesday Tickle: Puzzles For Brain Power

Creative people need brain power. It is brain power that brings the good ideas out in the open so we can shape and form them into novels, paintings, or whatever your medium of choice should be. Besides inspiration and the right foods, our mental faculties need regular workouts to stay sharp and focused so we can recognize a good idea when we see it. Puzzles are a quick and easy way to keep our thinking powerful.

How and why do puzzles help our brains stay alert and focused? The brain’s mini-computer runs on “software” much like our laptops and other digital thinking tools. Our brains require attention, processing, cognitive flexibility, the ability to retrieve stored information, and reasoning skills to get us through our basic day. These functions need regular challenge and are strengthened and more readily available to us if we remember to weave brain exercises into our lives.

Schedule creative play and work puzzles on a regular basis and your brain skills will remain sharp and intact for much longer. We all have so much on our plates these days that working a puzzle for brain training rarely crosses our fuzzy minds. Keep it simple and play games on your cell phone, carry around a small word puzzle book, and keep puzzles readily available in the house where it will allow you take just a few minutes on a regular basis and work it out.

Tuesday Tickle: Creativity Leads to Fashion Independence

My daughters are both very fashion focused. I like to think it’s partly my doing because I loved dressing them alike (the same dress in sizes 4T and 7, please,) and always making sure their clothes matched and were clean. I took great pride in dressing my beautiful babies. As they approached the pre-teen stages they turned their eyes toward me and noticed I didn’t dress myself like I dressed them. The closer it looks and feels to a pair of elastic waist pajama pants and a baggy t-shirt, the more I’m drawn to wear it. And if there’s a drawstring in the waistline, honey, I want six pairs, one in every color it comes in. My fashion savvy daughters do not approve.

I really don’t mind, but they have been picking out and/or “sanctioning” my clothing purchases for years now. No “matchy-matchy” (I will happily wear five shades of the same color at the same time,) and keep patterns at a minimum. I have been sitting at the mall food court with my daughter and she will gather my attention to a woman wearing a colorful pair of Capri pants and say, “In case I’m not with you when you’re shopping, no multi-colored prints across your butt.” I thought they were fun and vibrant looking. Let it be said, I have a few wardrobe pieces in hiding that neither off-spring would appreciate. This one pair of elastic waist silk pants from India is crafted of more than fifty fabric swatches and almost none of the patches match. Granted they are amazingly difficult to wear with any solid color top, but I love them.

I’m what’s known as a non-conformist dresser and personality in general. I’m not a trouble maker or intentional hellion, but I prefer the beat of my own drummer. My wardrobe reflects practicality and creativity. It’s practical because it is easy to wash (I do five loads of same-color laundry a week: whites, black, green, purple, and red/pink/orange. Although brown has recently been gathering strength.) It’s creative because I can buy a scarf of many colors and wear it with three other solids and have an outfit that is “acceptable” yet simple, quick and self-created. I didn’t have to rely on the whims of a regional clothing buyer at a major department store to pick out my clothes. I wear what I wear because I like it not because it’s fashionable.

In his fun book The Art of Non-conformity, author Chris Guillebeau looks at life much the same way I view creativity. Creativity is a side effect of thinking outside the normal way of doing things. Guillebeau explains that the advice we received as children from supposedly well-meaning adults was good to a certain extent. The patina-speckled remonstration goes something like this: If everyone else was jumping off a bridge, would you? Well…….it depends. Guillebeau says, “It’s not bad advice, even if it’s sometimes used to exert control more than to support independent thinking.” While the advice is meant to make us think for ourselves, then what’s wrong with dressing for ourselves? Because everyone else is jumping off the same fashion bridge into their laundry pile of the same thing everybody else is wearing doesn’t mean I’m going to swan dive right along with them. Guillebeau then says, “Screw those people jumping off the bridge. Make your own decisions. Live your own life.” But he adds to do in a conscientious way that contributes to our world and doesn’t suck from it greedily without returning the juices.

That’s what creativity is for. Being creative in life helps return the flow of exciting energies back into the Earth and the Universe to help others find their own creative habits. And as Guillebeau points out, the age old phrase is really meant to encourage independent thinking but the message gets skewed by manipulators with control agendas. Okay, I’m not really an intentional hellion, just want you to think (and dress) for yourself. After all, even Albert Eistein knew the clothes make the man when he said,

"Once you can accept the universe as being something expanding into an infinite nothing which is something, wearing stripes with plaid is easy." - Albert Einstein

Girls, I promise not to wear stripes and plaid at the same time out in public, but that’s as far as it goes. Love, Mom.

Tuesday Tickle: The Consequences of Creativity

This word “consequences” has mistakenly gotten a bad reputation in my opinion. Lots of people equate it with punishment for an action. That’s one way to look at it. Another way is to appreciate that for every action there is a reaction. What a scientific thing to say about something as karmic as consequences.

Being creative has its consequences. The degree of reaction to one’s creativity is directly related to our perspective, how we view things. Is everything black and white, a rainbow of color, or some shade of gray in the middle? Every view is creative to a certain point, some more creative than others.

The Either/Or Creative Soul: For example, some person’s degree of creativity is to see everything as either/or. It’s black or it’s white.  Is that a rigid viewpoint or a distinct one? Perhaps it’s just clean-cut and easy to classify. There are less containers to worry about and less brushes to clean up after an artistic episode. It’s a simple yet creative in a basic sort of way to live. Caution: with so little variety in this form of creativity boredom is a real danger.

The Rainbow Creative Wacko: Another type of creative personality sees a rainbow of colors and possibilities regardless of the situation. Maybe a bit Polly-anish for some of us, a tad too optimistic, but this persona fills a need in the circle of creativity. Without this person, the rest of us might never see the options. There’s always another way, and the rainbow creative does not recognize boundaries ever. Caution: fatigue easily sets in to this personality because the answers to questions are endless. Whew.

The Delicious Middle Ground Artist: Then there is the middle creative personality who keeps the rest of us in check, holds us together like the yummy center of an ice cream sandwich. But on hot days, middle-of-the-road-creatives melt down pretty quickly because they are never really sure about anything. Caution: this might be a depressing place to be over and over, day after day. Buy some rose colored glasses for a change of pace.

Thursday Thought: Journal As Memory Maker

A journal is a “home away from home” for our thoughts. Thoughts run the gamut from accomplishments to worries, and our journals are bound to catch all sorts of our ideas eventually. There are no rules for what should and shouldn’t be kept in a journal. That’s up to the keeper. Here are some ways a journal is helpful to just about everyone.

1.Place to keep track of life events. Just jotting down what happened on a particular day and what the weather was helps us review our lives whenever we take moments to go back through and reread entries. We feel a sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction which contributes to our overall feeling of positive self-worth.

2.Goals and wishes vault. The journal is a fantastic place to write down dreams and future plans. Write it down, make it happen really works because when we see our wants in writing it gives us a fresh perspective on their value and importance. Dream lists in a journal keep us focused and this refreshes our energy because we have something to work toward. Focusing on goals keeps depression at bay.

3.Creative projects tracker. Writers and artists often have a journal per book or art project which serves as a place to dialogue and document the work. Outlines, lists, resources, and comments are really important to the final result. They serve as a sounding board and a file for information and compliment the end product nicely. Many popular writers keep project diaries and publish them years later as “the making of” books to keep their works popular and interesting. This practice allows the safety and freedom an artist needs to make the inevitable mistakes that happen along the way to a creative endeavor.

Journals have a way of taking on a life of their own in a very short time. They are friends, confidents, and idea generators in many ways. In what way does your journal support your life and work?

There are five primary areas of practice to the Writer Wellness plan. Every other week I will post an idea for relaxation (Monday Meditation,) creative play (Tuesday Tickle,) fitness and exercise (Wednesday Workout,) journaling and misc. (Thursday Thought,) and nutrition (Friday Feast.)

When I recommend keeping a journal to students, family, or friends, I prepare myself for the typical response. “I don’t have time.” I have armed myself with quick and easy ways to help them get started and see that a journal doesn’t have to take up huge amounts of time to be fulfilling. But if someone stays on target and journals a small amount on a regular basis, it’s very possible they will need more and more journaling and then what? It’s a kind of viscious cycle that produces positive results but we should have reasonable boundaries in place so the journal doesn’t interfere with the goal of having a life and a successful career.

Journaling is suitable to anyone’s predicament. Because there aren’t any real rules, just helpful guidelines, it can be a win-win situation. Unless we become obsessed with keeping a journal and that’s where setting journal boundaries in the beginning is helpful.

We only have so much time in a day. In yoga we believe we are gifted with a finite number of breaths to breathe in a particular physical life time. When those breaths are exhausted, we leave one body for another body until we have breathed enough to be enlightened. Everyone requires a different number of breaths to get to this point, but suffice it to say time and breathing are finite resources that are very, very important.

Setting healthy limits for journaling disallows us to go overboard and journal more than we produce in other areas of life. It prohibits journaling from distracting us from the lives we are supposed to be living. It also makes journaling very do-able for most people. Set time limits and page limits that suit your particular needs. Here are some practical ideas to setting healthy, productive boundaries to successful journal keeping:

1.Choose a format with built in space definitions and decide ahead of time how much space a journal session will cover. For me, I have a large sketch book with blank pages without lines. On weekdays I write or draw or whatever on one page per day max. Weekends I spend more time with preparing pages with paint or collage pictures and write as many pages as I need to because I have more time.

2.Set a time limit by writing to a particular track on a music CD. Open the journal, start the music, and write. When the music is done so is the journaling. Not finished with a thought? Perfect! That’s a built in place to pick up the next journal session and it’s one less thing to come up with to write about.

3.An index card a day is a fun and challenging way to keep a journal and organize it. Try colored index cards for more inspiration. Monday=blue; Tuesday=pink; etc.
